If you fancy exploring your creative side, we have a huge and varied range of Arts, Crafts and Textiles courses on offer within our well-equipped and excellently staffed department.
Art
We deliver over 30 different Art courses. For absolute beginners we have ‘First Steps’ courses to kick start your drawing and painting skills in a relaxed environment.
From there, you can progress on to explore a range of techniques using different media, such as pastels, oils, watercolours, acrylics and egg tempera, in a variety of subjects.
We support your Art & Design projects and exhibit your work in a variety of ways:
- an annual art exhibition at Southend Central Library
- an annual art exhibition during the Leigh Art Trail
- and the newly created YP Gallery at our Southchurch Centre can be used by visiting artist and students
Craft & Textiles
We offer over 80 Craft and Textiles courses in a range of exciting areas.
If you want to try pottery, you can explore handbuilding, throwing, sculpture, learn about glazes, different clays and modelling techniques. Other crafts include mosaics, stained glass, interior design and furniture decoration.
In ‘Textiles’ we deliver courses in clothesmaking, simple tailoring, curtains, blinds and cushion making, knitting, patchwork and quilting, embroidery and beading.
Several of our students have used our courses as a stepping stone to move into other work or have been inspired to set up their own businesses!
