'Outstanding' result for Lancaster project

A project designed for young individuals with profound and multiple learning and sensory disabilities has been awarded an ‘Outstanding’ result in a recent inspection.

The Lancaster project is a partnership between Southend Adult Community College and Lancaster School. This joint venture provides a service to 19-25 year olds with profound and multiple learning and sensory disabilities. The project is currently housed within Lancaster School but exciting plans for a special, purpose-built building are underway.

The aim is to offer these individuals a meaningful learning experience, in some cases acting as preparation for them to move onto new things in their life.

Annie Clarke, Inclusive Learning Manager at Southend Adult Community College, said “Having this project locally is so fantastic as it means more young people can stay at home rather than having to go into long term care. It really is a great project."

In the recent A.L.I inspection, 2 of the project’s classes were visited – a ‘pre-reading and writing’ class and a pottery class. These classes were supported by reports which were presented to the Inspectors.

The visit went very well and the Inspectors were extremely impressed by the project and the course programmes that both Lancaster School and Southend Adult Community College put on for those with learning disabilities. Clearly reflecting this response, the project was awarded a well-deserved ‘Outstanding’ mark.
