Students' fantastic work rewarded

Art & Crafts students from Southend Adult Community College recently exhibited their work at Southend Central Library and the Leigh Centre, Elm Road.

“Exhibit A showcased the work of students from City & Guilds, NOCN & NCFE Craft courses including mosaics, patchwork and interior design.

“Art… was an exhibition of students work from both accredited and

non-accredited Art courses.

This year, a series of sponsored awards were introduced to the exhibitions.  There were 6 awards in total, 3 per exhibition.  The winners were announced at the opening night of the Art exhibition on Thursday 14th June.

The ‘Southend Adult Community College Award for the Most Popular piece’ was voted for by the general public.  The award went to Nicola Kimber, a student from the City & Guilds Level 3 course in Patchwork and Quilting, for a New Zealand inspired wall-hanging.  Nickie’s work has also been recommended for the prestigious City & Guilds Medal of Excellence.

The ‘Paul Eustice Award for Most Innovative Design’ was awarded to Wendy Scotland for her piece produced during her City & Guilds Level 2 course in ‘Kiln-Formed Glass.’  Her piece ‘Le Corset Rouge Sexy’ cleverly conveyed the look of lace and soft textiles but is made from slumped and sprayed glass.  A great supporter of the college’s courses, Wendy has a flair for innovation and material exploration.

The ‘Yvonne Pedretti Award for the Best Supporting or Exploratory Studies’ went to Joy Manda for her sketchbooks produced during an NOCN Design Projects course.  These expansive sketchbooks illustrated the level of commitment to her work and the depth of research she undertook.

The ‘Paul Eustice Award for the Best Art Piece Exhibited’ was won by John Debenham for his portrait produced on the ‘Do it like Degas’ course.  This was, for John, a new and unconventional approach to handling pastels.  The winning piece was an arm’s length portrait of himself with his wife, Greg.

The ‘Lynn Tait Award for Outstanding Achievement’ was awarded to Norman Hamblin who undertook a ‘Drawing & Painting’ course.  Despite health problems, Norman never missed a class and he grasped the use of watercolour well, using it with fluidity and dexterity, showing a strong attention to detail.

The ‘Yvonne Pedretti Award for the Best Use of Media’ was won by Valerie Sands.  Val was a beginner in the Egg Tempera class ‘Icons & Botticelli’ and her miniature ‘Portrait’ in the style of Botticelli has captured the qualities of the medium excellently.

All winners received a certificate and a prize, including vouchers for the Strand Gallery Art Shop in Southchurch, The Art house Art Shop in Leigh and a framed print of a local scene.  Prizes were kindly donated by Yvonne Pedretti, Paul Eustice and Lynn Tait.

The chosen students were delighted with their awards and their fellow course-mates were pleased to see their friends work being so deservedly recognised.

Southend Adult Community College would like to thank Yvonne Pedretti, Paul Eustice and Lynn Tait for their kind donations.
